His father was a Hungarian surgeon who came to Vienna before World War I, and his mother was a Rumanian.

At the 7th Regular Concert, there was a proposal of the cancellation from solist Nathan Milstein several hours ago of the concert suddenly. Therefore in a hurry, Hetzel substituded Milstein without a rehearsal. (Beethoven/ Violin Concerto)

At one of the mountains near St. Gilgen, 30 km away from Salzburg , he was walking with Mrs. Regula Hetzel. But he fell down the mountain path under 10m.
It was said that he dealt a heavy blow to his head because he took care of his hand as a violinist instinctively though he must have been helped if gave the rock his hand.
He was carried by helicopter to emergency hospital in Salzburg, but he died.
His mortal remains was buried in MaurerFriedhof in the Viennese suburbs.
